The historical Mission Brewery, founded in 1913 by German-cum-San-Franciscan August Lang—who had previously transformed the beer industry in Northern California—was swiftly closed before the onset of Prohibition, becoming a hospital annex during a massive 1918 influenza epidemic, and then a seaweed processing plant, fading into obscurity along with thousands of other American breweries affected by the Eighteenth Amendment.
For this week’s Tuesday Night Tasting series, we will be highlighting the beers of fledgling brewery Mission Brewing Company of San Diego, CA. Reviving the Mission Brewery name in 2007, they have given tribute to August Lang by specializing primarily in German-style ales and lagers, along with the hoppy styles Southern California is best associated with today.
Dave Woodlock of Mission Brewing will be in the shop to guide us through five of the brewery’s offerings. As usual, Tuesday Night Tastings at Bierkraft are free, fun and open to the public, but be sure to arrive early, as seating is limited. Cheers!
