NYC Homebrewers Guild Monthly Meeting

On Tuesday, May 20th, the New York City Homebrewers Guild will hold its seventh annual May mead meeting. Paul Holmes, of the Long Island Meadery is our guest speaker and will be talking about mead.
Come on in and learn a little about the nectar of the gods as we share commercial and homemade meads.

About NYHG:

The New York City Homebrewers Guild is the oldest homebrewing club in the New York City area. Founded in 1987, the guild's main purpose was to give homebrewers a rest haven to talk and learn about the aspects of making high quality hand-crafted beers and wines. In the past 20 years, many guild members have moved on from homebrewing into commercial brewing at various brewpubs and breweries.

Sixpoint Craft Ales Meet British Cheeses

Back Forty will turn over its draft and cask lines to Brooklyn-based Sixpoint Craft Ales, and the company's co-founder, Jeff Gorlechen, along with one of its brewers, will pull pints of and talk about five of its boldly flavored brews (including a cask ale made specially for the event). Back Forty's Michael Fuquay will also be on hand to match the beers with hearty British (and British-style) cheeses. Post-class lingering is encouraged as Sixpoint Craft Ales' brews will be on tap all night at the restaurant--or until the casks run dry.

Beer 101: The Domestic Crafts

There are over sixty styles of beers brewed in the world, more than 5,000 breweries and in excess of 15,000 brands of beer among all the styles brewed. In this class, we’ll taste them all in one night. Ok, maybe not all of them, but we will cover ten of the classic styles, all brewed by U.S. craft breweries. It's no longer just imported beers that serious beer lovers seek out. There has been a renaissance in the brewing and consumption of beer in the U.S. since the late 1970s, and we’ll taste some beers brewed in the Irish, English, Belgian, German, Czech — and American — style. Beer doesn’t have to be bland and yellow!

In the course of the tasting, we’ll discuss the history of beer through the millennia, from the dawn of civilization to the present. An Ancient Sumerian proverb read, “No children without sex. No drunkenness without beer.” Homer Simpson said, “I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.”
