Confluence ExtraordinBerry

The Wort Challenge is a collaboration and competition put on in conjunction with the Iowa Brewers Union homebrewers club. We design and produce an unfermented wort, the liquid that contains sugar extracted from grain before yeast is added that will turn it into beer, and then hand it over to a bevy of homebrewers who can modify and ferment it as they see fit. The finished products are judged by members of the IBU, employees of Confluence, and then finally the public. The winner gets to brew their beer with us on a commercial scale! The winners of the 2019 Wort Challenge were Shannon and Brian Olsson, and this is their beer. We started with a classic Berlinerweiss base, quickly soured by Confluence’s house lactobacillus culture, and then racked it onto more than 1500 lbs of berries! Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries to be exact. The final product is sweet and tart, refreshing and vibrant, and a perfect example of what you can do when you get good people together.
