In May of 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced the ambitious goal of sending an American to the Moon. Just over eight years later, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong set foot on the lunar surface. The underlying motives in the space race have long been debated, but recently unclassified documents have finally revealed just what they were looking for.
