Release the Kraken! The evolution from Sisyphus Barleywine into the Kraken is always complex, with the 2013 vintage being no different. Yet with this vintage the sublime journey had a little twist. As always, delicious barleywine was transferred into wine barrels of various American Oak types. Each of the barrels has a different personality (flavor profile) and contributes something unique to the final blend. Add to that the blending of beers with different amounts of time in oak. Half of the beer was aged for 11 months, the other half for 4. The more aged beer adds a significant depth while the younger beer helps bring about the balance that is the hallmark of this barrel-aged favorite. The hop character has diminished some over time, but that in no way means that the Kraken is a mild beast. Citrus flavor and aroma is still prominent due to the large amount of American hops that we use in our barleywine. The aging has helped to enhance the malt and yeast character, especially in the caramel, toffee, and fruity notes. The barrels contribute a hint of vanilla and a subtle spiciness to the overall experience. The 2013 Kraken, like all Mysterium Verum releases, is still very limited so don’t hesitate to try it when you see it.
