This distinctive brew honors our distinctive Eastern Black Rhinoceros friends at Des Moines’ Blank Park Zoo, Ayana and Kiano, who love playing with an empty Confluence keg that we gave them. Our simple malt recipe includes at least 20% rye malt for a light rye/spicy flavor and Victory malt that adds a nutty/roasty taste to balance the profile. Simcoe and Nugget hops provide bittering. The beer’s higher alcohol content is perceived as sweet and offsets some of the bitter, making its 82 IBU rating very deceptive. Mandarina Bavaria and Crystal hops add a fruity/citrusy flavor.
Ayana means “beautiful flower” in Kiswahili. Just be careful: unlike its 2400-pound rhino namesake, this 8.8 ABV beautiful flower of a beer can sneak up on you.
