About the brewery

FLAVOR OF SEA AND ADVENTURE
Centuries ago, Basque whalers regularly fished in Icelandic waters.

Centuries later, two teenage friends who had navigated different professional waters meet again in one port: the passion for quality beer . After several years of research and study, in 2014 they founded their microbrewery in Oiartzun and called their beer Mala Gissona .

Mala Gissona was founded in 2014 by Iban Zabala Rivero and Manuel Murillo Martínez. It currently has a brewery in Oiartzun (Gipuzkoa) that produces and distributes its beers throughout the Basque Country and national territory and also exports to countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, Italy, Portugal and Finland.

In 2015 , the first Mala Gissona Beer House was inaugurated in the Gros neighborhood of San Sebastián, offering 12 different varieties of draft beer, more than 150 bottled references and a menu of top-quality food prepared mostly with local products to accompany the beers.

SABOR A MAR Y AVENTURA

Mala Gissona captures the spirit of the ancient Basque whalers on their long campaigns in the North Atlantic. A personality forged “by sea and wind” that left a deep mark. Basque whalers have been fishing off the coast of Iceland since 1412. The link between these fishermen and the inhabitants of the island gave rise to a common language that blended Basque and Icelandic. A document from the time with 745 words in “Basque-Icelandic” is still preserved. It is the oldest dictionary of a living language in Iceland. “For ju Mala Gissuna” This phrase comes from this original document and means “you are a Bad Man”. It could be a basic form used by the Icelanders to refer to the Basque whalers that came to their shores. Men who at first impression were extremely rude, with a rogue point, but with time and treatment they reflected an honest, determined and faithful personality to their friends. The same personality that they apply to their craft beer to obtain all its splendor in flavors, nuances, aromas and textures.
“An honest, intrepid beer and faithful to its values”
