Beer Description

The field of entries was 40+ for this category in the 2015 Doug King Memorial Homebrew Competition, an annual comp put on by the Maltose Falcons. Our friends Eagle Rock Brewery already offer a Pro-Am opportunity for winners of the Doug King Comp, and we had the opportunity to get in on the action. The Doug King is meant to focus on lagers and experimental beers, as the late great Doug King was a prolific brewer of beers falling into those stylistic camps. The goal of ‘The British are Coming’ being British and Irish ale styles sub 9% ABV might not seem too ‘experimental’ but it still presented a challenge to the brewers who entered.
The Hooligan IPA is great example of ‘modern’ English IPA. The hopping is classic, fully utilizes the dual-purpose nature of the Challenger hop – using it both for early bittering, then late flavor and aroma. Maris Otter comprises the base malt, a point of divergence from most of MacLeod’s beers, which utilize Golden Promise. What I think really makes this beer shine is putting a little bit more age on it than would be normal for American pale hoppy beer. Age helps to marry the malt, yeast, and hop characters together with the alcohol.
